In our next getting to know your local shops and the people behind the business we are featuring Tagg Studio. Which in case you did not is located in the gorgeous Getliffes Yard. Claire & Nicola, like many others in Leek decided to take the plunge and set up their shop during lockdown!!
We asked the questions and Claire gave the answers!
How long you have been in business in Leek?
We first arrived at the yard in February and after a few months of setting up the studio we have finally opened our doors.
What you like most about your business?
Having the freedom to custom make all of our designs. Each design is drawn by hand and so there is definitely a personal element to our work. We get to be creative in such a positive environment and surrounded by lovey people. It is so rewarding seeing our unique design work in people’s homes.
Your top three best selling products/categories or services
Our hand drawn leopard cushion. Our organic cotton tea towels and table runners.
Why did you decide on Leek to start your business?
We fell in love with Getliffes Yard from the moment we stepped foot in it. We always wanted to have our own studio but as soon as we saw the space become available, we jumped at the chance. We love the friendliness of the people in Leek. Everyone has been so supportive.
What are your hobbies/interests/spare time?
Walking and going on adventures to find inspiration for our collections. Finding new places with lots of nature to photograph and draw from.
Where & what do you shop/spend money on in Leek?
We love vintage finds. In our spare time we will often have a good rummage through the many charity shops on the high street. We go to Paeonia Floral for the most beautiful flowers to brighten up our studio and the Coffee Beans Cafe for freshly made coffee to fuel our minds.
What has changed most for you in the past year/18 months and how have you adapted?
Opening up a store in lockdown was always going to be a challenge. Quitting our full-time job and taking the plunge into a highly competitive industry… some people would call us crazy. Nothing could have prepared us for the stress attached to starting up a business but we have loved every minute of it. Having our own studio is so rewarding. Waking up every morning knowing that we get to be creative in our own space is what we have always dreamed of.
What is your claim to fame/award achievement?
When Claire graduated from university, she received numerous awards for her work including the Hainsworth statement award at new designers. At graduate fashion week she won her place in the gala which made her one of the top 25 emerging designers in the country. From there we specialised in prints for fashion. We were lucky enough to set up our own brand and showcase one of our collections at London Fashion week in 2018.
